My hen was setting on 10 eggs that were due to hatch this past weekend. I checked her progress and noticed that some of the eggs were crushed flat under her...killing the fully developed chick. I removed those 3. One chick hatched no problem, the egg broke cracked open and the chick was free. The next day i found two chicks trying to get out of the shell and the egg was just shattered all over the place, like it was crushed.

3 chicks hatched by sunday and mom is raising them.

four eggs were left. I checked them this morning. When i tapped two they shattered completely and just crumbled.

Has anyone seen this before? When we eat the eggs the shells are very hard. So I am thinking lack of calcium isnt an issue.

any ideas?

Sounds like the shells were very porous and causing problems for the chicks. They lose too much humidity during incubation.

You're correct in your assumption.
