Crushed Stone or Pea Stone in Chicken Yard

I'm planning on expanding our yard and redoing the chicken yard, giving them more room. One thing I've noticed is my pathway back and forth becomes unattractive/muddy. Do you think it would be okay to use a pea stone pathway in the chicken yard? Should I be concerned about the chickens trying to eat them? Thanks.

I bet the chickens would do fine with pea stone gravel. Chickens tend to know when something is too big for them to eat.
