My chickens eye is a bit crusty. She was sick a couple weeks ago and thought they were the same problem. Got her antibiotics and she got over the sickness. The eye seemed to have gotten better. Now it’s back and worse than ever. We have the topical antibiotic. Is there anything else we should be doing. If not how long for the topical?

Flush the eye with saline, remove any crust and pus from the eye. Apply an ointment in to the eye like Terramycin eye ointment at least twice a day. You can find this at TSC or online.

Are there any lesions or pasty yellow material inside the beak?

Not my post but I’m dealing with what you are saying above @Wyorp Rock I’m assuming canker? Fowl pox? I’m wondering where your head is at. Sorry old post. I had roosters fight and one get fowl pox bad, then canker. Isolated and treating. Now after my salmon Faverolles rooster had a scuffle he started having crusty yellow eye lids and a bit of yellow plaque on bottom tip of his beak. Giving metrodiazole? Orally and fungal cream and Terramycin on eyes. Any tips? Thank you

Do you have photos of the material inside the beak?

If there's a bad rotten odor, then usually that's Canker, so you're correct, Metronidazole would be the treatment of choice. Or you could use Acidified Copper Sulfate.

If there's no bad odor, it could be Wet Form of Fowl Pox which can cause lesions inside the beaks, but generally it affects the eyes with scabby lesions as well. An antibiotic may help with secondary infection when dealing with Wet Form of Fowl Pox.

If you're detecting a sour or yeasty odor, then it may be sour crop or yeast infection. An antifungal like Miconazole, Fluconazole, Clotrimazole, Nystatin can be used for treatment.

For the eye, if it's due to fighting, then flush/clean with saline, remove pus and apply Terramycin in the eye, do this a couple of times a day until healed up.

I've had roosters fight many times and have injured eyes, broken beaks/toes, etc., but never dealt with them developing any type of lesions inside the beak. The best I can tell you is to continue to address symptoms and make sure he's eating/drinking well.

Thank you! Yes I’ve also had roosters fight but never dealt with this either. I don’t have any pictures of his mouth. It doesn’t smell, i think whatever is going on I caught it early. I thought canker and wet pox were the same thing. What antibiotic would you recommend? Thanks

Fowl pox is a virus, and cannot be treated with antibiotics. That is why it is important to know if there is a bad odor and see the yellow in the beak. Canker, a protozoa is treated with various things, such as the antibiotic metronidazole, ronidazole, or acidified copper sulfate in the water. Many people cull birds with canker to control the spread.

Thanks so much for the info. I wish I could get pictures but it’s on two of my roosters. The one I’m referring to above I believe i caught it early. My other one I may have to cull. I think my salmon Faverolles got it from him. I’m treating both with anti fungal and terimycin in eyes. The both are crowing and punky but not eating well. I have them both separated from the flock and from each other. So fowl pox wet and dry is a virus so it can just run its course but with supportive measures and antibiotics for secondary infection. Canker I continue with anti fungals? I also plan to add garlic to water. I have acidified copper sulfate in everyone’s water. I’ve had chickens for years but didn’t quarantine when I put my roosters together 🥹. I hope they both pull through. Thanks for the help

Canker is a protozoan organism, not a fungus, so antifungals won’t treat it. If you are dealing with a yeast or fungus, it might help. Acidified copper sulfate 1/4 tsp per gallon of water of water is being used more for canker, since metronidazole is difficult to get, and not an approved drug for laying chickens. A vet might be able to help diagnose the organism with a microscope slide from a scraping of it.

Ok gotcha. I thought metronidazole was available on Amazon and pigeon supply stores. My flock I have issues with are all roosters luckily! I’ve brought birds to the vet before, it ended up costing a lot and I ended up loosing the birds all 3 times. 🥹 I really appreciate the info. So much to learn even after having them for years. Thank you
