One of the chicks has developed crust on his/her head! It was dried over the beak, but I was able to soak it and peel it gently off; there is still some by the eyes and under the beak (if I gently pull at it, it makes the baby's beak open and it freaks me out). Did s/he just get pooped on (doesn't smell like it) or maybe got crumbles wet when eating or is this a first sign of something nasty?

Any input appreciated, sorry the pics aren't closer up- I'm not talented enough to hold the chick and snap a pic!

It is hard to see in the pictures, but if it doesn't smell like poop, I'm inclined to think they took a drink and while their head/beak was wet, they ate and got some wet food stuck to their head/beak.

I'm assuming the chick is healthy. No sneezing or nasal drainage?

In case anyone ends up looking for answers in this post, I'm replying to myself to share what I now think was going on- I should have looked more closely at the chick's beak, as it has gone on to develop a more and more dramatic case of "Scissor beak". I think the baby was just sticking it's head deeper into the crumbles in order to successfully eat (and getting more stuck on the beack/face than the others) and I mistook it as a sign of respiratory distress. I'm glad I continued to clear the nostrils etc.
Healthy bird other than the beak situation, haven't had any respiratory junk go on with anyone in the flock. Live and learn.
