About all you can do is make sure your coop & run are as secure as possible and then some. There are many threads with
info on secure coops etc. Just take a good hard critical look at your set up and see what else could be done.
Heck been doin that for years, is that what they mean by "proactive security".....LOL

On a serious note, just was outside, hear the howling of multiple wolves, just north of my land, at least 3 wolves, not overly joyed by this, I howled back, there was an immediate dead silence. There is absolutely no wind tonight, its clear and cool about 24 f outside, I swear I could hear them growling, but not 100% sure. My Wife heard the growling 1 night a few weeks back, got my 2 Dogs indoors for the night...

seriously... so it sounds like it's not just a lone wolf then........... and they are pretty close. Not encouraging.
I was told by some locals, there was rumoured to be a 4 wolf pack a few miles from here. But deer hunting opened here today, and you can shoot a wolf on the tag too, if you get a chance. I am a land owner and do not need a license to kill any predators... on my land that is

The federal government in all of it's magnanimity, generosity and deep concern for our wondrous world saw fit to re introduce the Mexican Wolf into Arizona. Then they put out the word that anyone that harmed their wolves would probably spend the rest of their lives in the pokey. They assured us that these wolves were the kinder, gentler, vegetarian type of wolves. We had nothing to fear.

Well, if these darn wolves were harmless, why weren't they re introduced to Central Park in New York City, or better yet Washington, D.C.?

Preserve the wolf!!!....as a mount beside the fireplace........

Better yet, tranquilize the rascal, and turn him loose in the yards of some of the minions-who-would-be-god that spend so much time trying to protect them. "There you are.....your very own wolf. Take good care of him, now, as you claim he's endangered".

I dont mind the wolf, they have an important purpose(keep other predators in check for one, coyotes just run rampant here). We have a lot of them tho and management is very much encouraged.

About 15 yrs ago wolves were very few in this area, hunter would bring in maybe 1 every couple years, trappers would make their money for the season if they could catch one due to the rarity, now over the past 5 yrs or so the population exploded(together with all the ungulates dissappearing) and we get in 10 or so wolves a year in the taxidermy shop(and thats just the one I work at , we got about 9 in the area).

This year they even caught and collared a couple dozen wolves in the effort to figure out their migration to help save the mountain caribou(only about 11 caribou left, all old and not producing anymore.... catching and fencing off a mountain for them to be safe would work better then anything but whatever.... not enough people would make money off them if they did that - i asked-).

Around here they are not hellbend on killing them all, but if you see a pack, go ahead and take 1, they breed like rabbits with our large game numbers and 1 being take out of a pack now and then doesnt do much harm to their population.

Lot more wolves around these parts too, was Cougar sightings very close, but non photoed or caught, those scare me more than anything.
I have seen a lot of Wolves since we moved out here 10 years ago, even locals who have spent their lives here have not seen what I have seen..

Wolves are generally not brave enough to try and break into anything, so as long as you dont have anything free range you should be reasonably safe. I think they were more interested in your dogs then anything(they want to lure them away and kill them thinking they are a rival pack) We have 2 packs that move thru our place every couple weeks, one is a pack of 3 and the other a pack of 9, they generally stick to the wooded part of the property, and you only hear their howls at night(I actually sit on my porch howling   cause its really cool when they answer). Our livestock dogs are smart enough to know they are no match and will not follow them into the woods.
So far I prefer them to those rotten yodel-dogs(coyotes).

But regardless, when they get bold enough to give me a visual of them they are toast, wolves with a healthy respect for people will not show themselfs, once they dare show themself in the open there may be something wrong or -like in banff- where someones been feeding them to the point they approach stopped cars on the highway(have actually seen that about a month ago, they seriously walked up to cars looking into windows begging for food, WILD WOLVES! it was mortifying to see people being delighted by that opening their doors to feed them).
My parents recently visited Banff and they had bears come up to their camp ground and start licking the BBQ while they hid inside. :/

You have lots of crazy predators to worry about there! Scary!
