Well, it didn't take long. Already got a letter from the town telling me i can't have chickens. donkeyholes.

So, just about everyone is being sold for cheap...b/c I have to get rid of them and b/c i don't know who's broody and who's laying.

$5 per layer/broody: 2 buff orps, 1 delaware, 1 RIR.
$3 unknown chick--dad was blk jersey giant, hatched by the broodies and doing quite well.
some more chicks may hatch, mixed breed with jersey giant and BTW japanese.

I am taking at least two chickens (Tina for those who remember her and a buckeye, they were the first two to go broody) into the house with moodene's diapers 'cause i just can't handle losing everyone.

ahhh im sorry to hear that, are you gonna fight for a permit?
We are in the progress of the same thing, but our zoning guy told us that if he dont get anymore complaints he wont come down, he know we are keeping them. but we are keeping them inside our garage, open during day closed at night, a couple neighbors are ok with it.

layers/broodies are sold. I still have two female muscovies available. I am going to start a petition and get things moving in this town. i just have too much on my plate right now.

OK, I have something to post. One of my Buff Orphingtons has gone broody! We are excited, and a little nervous. We're still learning about how to take care of chickens and this is the very first time one of our hens went broody (they are only a year old). She has been sitting on 5 eggs since Monday. I saw her off of them once - for a very short time. We are putting up a dog crate and another "brooder box" in the coop this weekend and are going to try to move her in there. Wish us luck!

I heard that we should be giving her chick starter food for the extra nutrients. Is this true? Also, what do I need to know about vaccinating the new babies when the arrive? We've only bought day-old chicks before and know about the medicated feed. What else? Will it hurt mama if she eats medicated chick feed?

If one (or more) turns out to be a roo, would anyone be interested? One is plenty enough for us!

Thanks!

In Stamford we can have chickens without a permit, but no roosters.... but if someone complains then we have to get rid of them. I refused to get rid of my 2 roosters and had to go to court last year. It was a nuisance complaint because the guy was trying to sell his house for a price that was too high...and he ended up selling it and leaving. But the case had to go on because the city takes over. I really wanted to persue it because Im in the northern wooded end, and I believe that the laws are for the more populated city areas. My one roo really watches over the flock (which free ranges) and he currently has a bobcat bite on his butt to prove it!
Anyway, I won, and was thrilled that the health inspector called my place perfect...she loves it here (and I also know her from the parrot store...I breed and keep some parrots as well) and that the judge was ticked because the complainant made a nuisance suit and made me go to court 3 times, pay a lawyer, when there isnt a problem that can be proven. I cant stand the sound of roosters crowing all day, and thats why I get rid of extra roos as quickly as I can...and I don't let them out of the barn till after 9AM. They are certainly quieter than the machines that the lawn crews are running at 8AM on Saturday over there!!
anyway, so far so good with the new neighbors...and I think that everyone is happy to have my birds eating the bugs!

I only had 27 but last week the bobcat took 10...and now Ive got a ton of babies because I had a couple of girls go broody and so kept putting different eggs under them...and I have an incubator going as well. I just want to know who is inside those eggs!
Since I have a couple of showgirls, frizzles, I had a couple of polish and frizzle polish (now gone, ) and a couple of blue marans...not to mention wacky white leghorns, and real aracuanas, Im getting some very interesting babies.
Ive ordered some chicks from mypetchicken.com; polish and leghorns, and I just bought some tolbunt frizzle polish (harlequin) eggs....because Im crazy!

Does anyone know if that coop from craig's list is still available?
What I really need to is to figure the best way to enclose a run for the tolbunts.

So, who else is around southern CT with chickens? What kinds of birds are you raising?
Any ideas about bobcat protection?
I have a great little barn and the birds go in at dark but this thing came before dark...so now Im out there early every night come hell or high water chasing chickens into the barn!...its a nightmare, but until the bobcat's babies leave the nest it wont go back to the reservoir, where we're thinking it came from.

Last year it was raccoons....this year a bobcat...we always have hawks....whats next?

Melina

5 little dogs, poison dart frogs (who I am interested in selling if anyone is interested,) 17+ chickens (babies included...and many eggs to hatch this weekend, I think,) 1 huge fish, 1 catfish, 1 Jardine parrot, 2 yellow side green cheek conures, 2 crazy lovebirds having babies some of the time, fire finches having babies, cordon blue finches having babies, 2 moustache parakeets, 2 parrotlets who wont go in the nestbox, 2 budgies....and the most exotic pet of all, a 15 year old boy!!
