Cubalayas?

Henderson's list has them down as "Cuba's fighting meat bird." Other pages have mentions of "game" and "aggression," etc.

I think Cubalayas may need a marketing specialist to get them some better publicity, to more firmly cement their image as "drama free" and to help folks to realize that they're super for some backyard situations.

Thanks for your reply.

I've tried and tried and tried.

Saladin, my friend, you have done more for this breed than anyone else. Thanks for all you've done, and keep on trying.

I hope my comment about needing a marketing specialist wasn't seen as a criticism. It was supposed to have a note of mournfulness frustration to it. It's too bad that the Cubalaya are misunderstood. And I do think they are likely unknown and/or misunderstood by a majority of newbies to chickens.

I want to start raising Cubalayas on my farm as a free range flock for eggs and meat. I have heard so much good about this breed and really want to give them a try. Problem is, they are not easy to come by. Can anyone hear give me some advice to get started. Thanks

Ideal Poultry and Sandhill Preservation each have them, as does Urch. Good breeder birds may be harder to come by, I'd suggest you start with hatchery stock, and if you like them, start looking for better birds later. They are not for everyone, they are small, grow slowly, lay smaller eggs, and will never come close to a production bred laying hen. They are good free rangers, good mothers, easy keepers, hardy, smart, calm tempered, and beautiful though. If you want more of a larger birds with larger eggs go with Sandhill.

PS we have a much longer thread already going on BYC, please post anything else there, and read it if you find the time, it's getting kind of long..

just saw this forum and felt like I should add my 2 cents worth. I have had about every breed of dual purpose chicken. the cubalaya is all around the best largefowl that we have raised. it is our 'farm chicken'. we eat the eggs, we eat the meat, we sell a few birds, we sell some eggs to friends. they can forage, they can avoid predators, they are tame to humans, they lay delicious medium sized eggs, they lay longer and more productive throughout their lifespan than many dual purpose breeds, they are not game, they are a very good looking chicken and no other breed resembles them. the info that is out there says they are fighting chickens from cuba. this makes them unpopular. they are more American than Cuban at this point and they are not 'game'. try them.

I am new to keeping chickens, but I hope to eventually keep and raise Cubalaya's. My challenge is that I can't really find them. Most of the hatcheries that offer them, don't have them available every time that I check. Does anyone have any resources for Cubalaya's?

Thanks!
