Hey y'all love all the chicken chatter here so I joined up! We raising our 1st flock for about 17 weeks Rhode islands, Easter eggers and Plymouth rocks. Had 15 and just lost my first to a prolapsed vent with a really hard disc like protrusion on the end? I was soaking her in warm Epsom salts and trying to push it back in.. but it was 100 degree days as well and lost her? What happened to her to begin with? None of the flock has laid yet. Since march

Welcome to BYC. I am very sorry for your loss.
Layers need a good quality food with around 18 to 20% protein. Because I keep roosters and young chicks, I use a flock maintainer feed and keep a source of calcium/oyster shell on the side.
Do your pullets have access to oyster shell? What are you feeding?

welcome to BYC. sometimes reproductive system problems like prolapse vent can be genetic . or maybe they aren’t getting enough calcium. do you supply them with crushed oyster shell in a side dish ? even then sometimes they can get prolapse. i’m sorry for your loss.

No oyster shell but I will try it. Also can grit be too much to digest? I don't know what safe amounts are? Thought she had too much possibly after it was new to the ritual?

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

Sorry for your loss of such a young pullet.

They will eat what they need to keep the gizzard functioning. I doubt excess grit had anything to do with the prolapse. Her reproductive system was just not fully developed and this is what happened to her.

Howdy, :frow and Welcome to Backyard Chickens.

Happy :ya to have you here with us. Enjoy your time here at BYC!

Thanks for joining our community! :celebrate

I recently switched from All flock feed with layer feed because 8 have ducks too. Since the all flock is only 17 percent prot. Can they lay eggs with 17? Can ducks live on layer feed? And all species should be laying first eggs any day?

Sorry that sounds all over the place? Need proper food for chickens and ducks at 17 weeks old no eggs yet

if you keep ducks and chickens together, please feed an all flock feed, and put the oyster shell out there separately, not mixed in. also the grit separately, not mixed in.
do you have any drakes? how many ducks do you have and how many of the ducks are males?

drakes will injure chickens by trying to mate with them
