What color should the cuckoo maran eggs be? Are they lighter than the black copper? Does anyone have pictures of their cuckoo maran eggs? I bought some eggs for my broody hen but I think they are kinda light. This is my first experience with them. Thanks in advance!!
It depends what lines/quality you get. Most Cuckoo Marans out there are hatchery quality, and normally have very light eggs - Most not even qualifying as Marans eggs. But really, if you get good quality Marans from a reputable breeder, they can be just as dark as a Black Copper's eggs.
Thank you. I got them from a breeder but they are lighter than I think they should be. We don't breed here. We just sell the extra eggs that we don't eat and enjoy them as pets so it isn't really important. I mostly curious if they had lighter eggs than normal. These are my eggs.
Those are a little light, but a couple of my girls are laying a little light too right now. Like the Black Copper Maran, the eggs will lighten up mid-season. They will get darker once they've had a little laying break. Mine are from a nice breeder stock, not Bev Davis or anything that I'm aware of, but they're definately not hatchery stock.
Also, just wanted to add that my girls lay twice as dark as the eggs they were hatched from. I think my eggs came in the mid-season as well.
Here are some of my eggs at their darkest...yeah...oopsie!
Thank you everyone. I am not too dissapointed since we just want them as pets and I think the birds are real pretty. I don't understand why they wouldn't be Marans. Of course they aren't up to the standard but they would be sub-standard marans wouldn't they?

Well, they could possibly be Barred Rock crosses, some people con their customers.
But I'm just betting that they're "sub-Marans" meaning they're probably Marans, but just not desired at all by Marans breeders. Eggs that light are deemed "not Marans."
