Cuckoo Maran or Barred Plymouth Rock?!?!???

It won't be very long before you know for sure, but I still see one of each. As they get older, I am betting the differences between the patterns will become more clear. The Plymouth Barred Rock will have distinct, crisp black and white barring compared to the Cuckoo Maran which will have a softer, lighter, barring. And the coloring of the legs should become more distinct as they get older.

I have one Cuckoo Maran and she is the lowest on the pecking order of 10 chickens. She is just a little bit smaller than all the other birds I got. Very sweet, but definitely lowest on the pecking order.

The older bird is a Cuckoo Marans pullet and the younger bird is probably a barred Rock pullet if the photo/lighting isn't tricking me into seeing yellow legs. And the reason the Cuckoo Marans pullet doesn't have feathered legs is because the English Standard in the UK requires clean-legged birds. The French Standard; however, calls for feathered-legs. Both varieties were originally imported into the US. The French Standard has gained in popularity in recent years as claims were made that the French birds produced darker eggs...

Here are some older pictures of birds I had fifteen years ago.
