I got 10 Cuckoo Marans from Ideal this spring & now that they have matured it looks like 8 out of 10 are all roosters! I just want to make sure I'm judging correctly. There are 2 (I think hens) who have always been rumpless... no tail feathers sticking up at all. All the rest have very erect tail feathers & most are starting to curl over. There are a couple of roosters that I have no doubt but don't the hens usually have tail feathers? There are a couple that have the tail feathers but waddles & combs not as large or dark as others. ** I also forgot to say that only 2 are crowing so far and one much more than the other.

Seeing differences in them if they are all the same breed and age is a good indicator of gender difference. Marans are not known to be rumpless, though. What do you notice about their heads? Are there some combs that are bigger or darker in color? Post pics, please. Guessing is fun, but it's really hard when they're very young.

Not to interrupt but on the Marans - the darker ones are female and the ones with splashes of white are males. I found a website on this cause I had some. Turns out I only had 2 females and 4 males.

Edit: this was for Cuckoo Marans

I think that second picture may be a hen but I can't tell because the other pictures are at odd angles and I can't see. The last is of course a roo on the left side.
My cuckoo marans are terrible feather pluckers and I have one roo with beautiful color who has never grown back his tail feathers.

Sorry,I know this will not make you happy but I do not see any girls.Your tailless bird is boy t:hmmn this age girls will be darker and no combs.I think your birds are ab 12 weeks.

They all look like my girls to me. And they certainly look old enough to be laying with the red combs. If you do not have a roo, you will get crowing from a hen. No tail feathers come from several things like trauma or picking. Males are usually very light and all of yours look so dark but it has happened that a male is darker than the norm or a pullet is lighter than usual.

Like a couple other people have said, the Cuckoo Maran hens will be darker in color, more of a black and white, where as the Cuckoo Maran roosters will be lighter in color, more of a gray and white.

I don't know about the tailess thing but I do know that Cuckoo Maran hens can have pretty big combs.
