I've got two 5 1/2 week old chicks from Meyer. They were from an assortment so when I got them I had no clue as to what they were...just little black chicks. When they first started feathering I was pretty sure they were barred rocks. Now however, I'm not so sure. They are mostly black with white dots...which leads me to believe that there is a possibility that they could be cuckoo marans. I have some younger barred rocks that I got from Meyer at a later date...they are about a week and a half old now and they have the distinctive barring that the older chicks didn't seem to have. Has anyone else gotten cuckoo marans from Meyer and have pics of them around 5 weeks or so? Any opinions as to wether these chicks are hatchery barred rocks or cuckoos?

The chicks in question are between the two white chicks. Both chicks have single combs and are about 5 1/2 weeks old.

If their feet are pink = Marans
If their feet are yellow = Barred Rocks.

There's a really visible difference in color. Very easy distinction to spot.

Thanx so much...can't wait to get home and check their feet

Now...since they lay the dark eggs, if I breed with an EE roo when they get older, will the offspring lay olive eggs or does it have to be the other way around (EE hen and Cuckoo Roo)??? Does it matter which is which?

Oh my! I have the same chicks from the same place and was wondering the same thing! Thank you both for the posts. Now I can figure it out too!
