"Cull" hens

I know some people have said they have 5 and 8 year old hens still laying. They don't lay as much as they did at 1 and 2 but they can still lay. If you can't afford to feed them forever you'll have to make a decision. Either process them yourself or sell them to someone who will also probably process them eventually when they stop laying. I have a few, especially the bantams who are just lawn ornaments and pets, that I will probably keep forever even if they do stop laying. It's not like I don't have the space. Others will be dog food eventually.

You have to do some research and preparation to find someone reliable. We have gone away for up to a couple of weeks at a time. Currently we have a great animal sitter who is a vet tech - very reliable. A few years ago we used the daughter of one of my husband's coworkers.
If no one in your neighborhood knows about chickens but wants to learn, you coud have them come and do chores with you until you think they have a clue.
