Thanks,I was going to see if my cousin would send some over for me but if you are already ordering some I would love more information to possibly piggy-back.

there are two kinds - if you do ducks or other large birds you'll need the wall mounted. I have orpingtons and you can *just* get away with the handheld for them, but I broke a pair of handheld on a drake, so I have both kinds now. The handheld you can use right down to hatchling quail, so is very good for chicks that are not going to make it.

I may order a few pairs of these from the UK and have my mother send them over. If anyone wants to piggy-back on my order, PM me and we'll try and work something out.

My mom used to have hundreds of chickens when she was little in the depression. She told me once that if you stroke a chicken between the eyes it sort of hypnotizes it. They would do this before chopping for dinner. Just an idea to help calm her if you have to do it.

Sucks - sorry for you. I couldn't do it to mine. She wasn't in any pain so I just let her go her own way in her sleep.

:)

I'm a real wuss when it comes to dispatching animals too, fortunately DH is okay with it so he usually takes care of things.
But I needed a backup method for when he's not around.

For chicks, I punched a hole in a sour cream container and put the chick in, then used an unlit propane torch and put it in the hole. It worked within 2 minutes.
Then when I had a nasty incident involving the chickens taking a strong disliking to a turkey (UGH!!) I did the same except just put a plastic bag over its head and inserted the (unlit) propane torch.

Once again, very quick and the bird did not seem to be traumatized whatsoever.
