Cull the eight week old roo or not?

My grandfather, in Oregon raised meat birds. He always told me when a rooster is starting to crow, he's big enough to butcher. No other feed is needed to gain the meat.
He will be tender and a goodly portion of meat.

I have a new bunch of chicks. It looks like out of 32 birds, about 7-8 are roosters. Some will be kept for breeding. That will leave me around 22-24 hens for eggs.

What about separating him? So far I have the young bird separate from the big birds but everyone can see one another. Today he was chasing my lowest on the pecking order with scissor bake and I got mad at him and put him in with the big girls. Was he trying to protect them from the other birds? Or was he going after her? Is it good that I separated him or bad that I separated him? It was only for a short time. Was that not enough time or too much time? Too many contradicting opinions out there I just guess I need as many as I can get and see what works for him but I don’t want to ruin it for us right from the start

Not sure I was clear here. Darn auto correct. I have the young flock away from the three older girls. They all roost together at night, but I want to keep the little ones in a smaller area, until they figure out the coop and going in and out on their own. They’re easy to catch that way! Today I saw the cockerel chasing my under dawg chick with a scissor beak and got mad, carried him around a bit and put him with the big girls. Any advice is appreciated. I want him to respect me, but not be terrified because I think that will backfire as easily as making him my baby.
