cull viable eggs- Updated- one out and heading home in bator

Wow. Y'all are so sweet. I didn't even think of trying to get someone to transport the eggs in the bator.

The eggs are actually belong to one of the kindergartners, a former student of mine (I teach preschool). It's possible I could send the bator home with them, which would be best, since they were just going to keep the chicks we hatched anyway.

The school has a forced air LG incubator. I don't have a car adaptor, or anything like that. How would we go about transporting the eggs in the bator to this student's house? And how long of a trip can the eggs take. Also, how can we keep the eggs from rolling around in the bator and cracking and breaking during the trip (since they're in lockdown, they're not stablized in the turner anymore). I have fake eggs filled with sand and a couple of rocks in the there to hold the heat, since I only had a few eggs to set. This should be good for transporting them b/c it will help hold the heat in the eggs, but I again, I'm worried about the eggs rolling into that stuff and breaking.
Of course, if the chicks hatch, I'll just send the chicks home with her like I was planning to.

If they aren't able to take the bator, then I will talk to them about maybe having someone come and get the eggs. I wouldn't want to just send their eggs/chicks out without permission and I think they'll agree to it. Thanks guys.

I live in the Dallas area, if anyone is nearby. Thanks!

I'm heading from work now, but I'll recheck this thread when I get back in the morning. Maybe we'll get lucky and at least one of the little guys will come out tonight.

You could just leave them in the incubator. Put paper towels down under the eggs, put a little dish of water and a little dish of feed in there. If any hatch, they'll have all the luxuries of home. And they do learn to eat and drink on their own; Ive never had to teach one. I just plop them in the brooder and they eat and drink when they are ready. Maybe knock the temp down just a smidge, too.

Dont forget, babies ship all the time, and are sometimes 3 or even 4 days without food or water. Not that thats the best for them, but if you put a little food and water in there, might tide them over til you get home.

A couple of thoughts...if they don' hatch out tomorrow by the time you're ready to leave school...just unplug and take the bator home with you. I know...this is not "ideal"but neither is the alternative...so as soon as you get home plug it back in and see what happens. If none of them survive then as least you gave it your best shot...hey maybe you'll get lucky and a couple will hatch. If you live more than 20-30 mins. away from the school...ask someone that lives closer...I mean come ...it's for the kids!

Oh transport them in an egg carton in the bator. Keep the heat sinks in there to keep them warm and wrap it in a heavy blanket. They will take awhile to cool off and just make sure to put them in the carton with the bottoms cut out and let it heat up again before wrapping it up.

Best of luck. I know there are people in your area willing to help.

If no one on BYC lives close to you then do a shout out on Craigs List. You'll probably get reams of responses within the hour! There are sure to be many MANY other people near you who have incubators and wouldn't mind adding a few eggs in with their own - or have broody hens. They say you are never more than eight feet away from a spider and I'll wager that you are never more than 8 miles away from a hatching addict

If the little bugger makes it out in the next few hours, we are good, but if he doesn't and we need to transport him somewhere while he pipped, what is the best way to do this? Follow the same advice given earlier on the thread? Just wondering if there are any changes.

Come on little chickie- zip! Please zip! This is not the time to take decide to take 12 hours to zip!
