I took the advice of a few people and decided to cull my chickens and start over. I only had 7 and only 1 of those was a hen. One by one they were coming down with respiratory issues. I had already culled 4 much earlier that had just not responded to Baytril I got from the vet. That said, I am planning on liming twice like Flock Mistress suggested the coop and run. I also bought a gal of Oxine AH as well. Do I need to lime the whole yard? they had been out there foraging from time to time. I also used the excess litter to mulch some shrubs. Do I need to do anything about that? I just want to make sure since I did all this that I do it all right. I do not want to battle this over and over nor do I want to keep killing my chickens. Thanks for any advice.

No takers. No one has any ideas for me on what I need to do? I know there are some!

Hi scwheeler24,

I would simply keep the chickens locked up for as long as it takes the yard to disinfect itself. For MG that's not a long time but for some other respiratory issues it can be in the order of weeks to months. I would think 2 months would make it pretty unlikely to harbour a respiratory disease agent, but I may be wrong (you'd need to look up how long each organism survives off the bird...)

The pen itself obviously would need cleaning and disinfecting depending what the disease organism was. For MG I've gotten by with just sweeping, airing and leaving empty for 2 weeks. I didn't have the disease return.

Other illnesses may take longer to clear from debris and dander.

best of luck
Erica
