Culled (for eating) some quails today... my observations

haha true true, but my issue is my birds are here mainly for genetic reasons, and the meat is just a rare commodity when I feel like it and have too many excess ...and after my dog already has a ton in the freezer for her lol.

as for Texas A & Ms "recipe" they don't give exacts but they used the English white and browns to produce it

They genetically selected from those birds for those traits. I almost wonder if they used the term "white meat" loosely as a selling point....my one firend has been breeding coturnix for DECADES and says that A & Ms aren't really white meat..makes you wonder

Funny thing is that I never realized they were supposed to be white meat. I thought they were just bred for the white colored feathers to make them easier plucking just like chickens. I never knew the meat was supposed to be different.

yep supposedly they're supposed to be but the kicker IS that anyone i've talked to doesn't see a difference in them or the other colors of coturnix.

The last batch I butchered had two males just full of fat too. My birds aren't that old either.

gross isnt it!? LOL! What do you mainly feed your quail? I'm trying to figure out if it's what im feeding them or if it's normal for older than 12 week old roos

The ones I butchered were on Purina Mills Flock Raiser Sun Fresh. I've since switched my food, so I guess I'll see if the next batch is fatty.

Recipe diet takes “natural” to a whole new level by using only the freshest, highest quality sun-grown grains and plant proteins to give birds the wholesome, healthy goodness and fresh taste they deserve. Made from natural plant-based ingredients FREE of all animal proteins and fats, it contains all the quality nutrients necessary to raise strong, healthy, beautifully colored chickens, ducks and geese from hatch, through growth and to laying age - all in one bag."

One would think that there would be zero fat using this feed! No animal proteins and fats??? Sounds like a vegetarian diet to me!

I feed mine ground corn mixed with lord knows what for protein.
