Culled my first quail. Debrief thread.

Most dogs I've been around hate going to the vet. They are nervous and uncomfortable. Why would I want that to be my best buddy's last memory? We'll go out...chase a bird as best we can, have a steak, and it will be over instantly. It's my responsibility as his caretaker and I owe it to him. I've done the vet thing. It's not pleasant for any animal. I realize that this is a controversial thing, but my dogs are happy in the field. They'd rather be with me hunting than anything else. I'd hope to be so lucky when I go...doing something I love.

My ex took his young daughter and there dog camping( an old English sheep dog)
They went for a walk up a hill sadly the dog lay down and died, she was 13 yrs old
They carried her down and the hill wrapped her up and put her in the car boot and drove home

Unfortunately he forgot to tell me( I was asleep when they came back) he'd took his daughter home, his ex wife had been distraught, it was her dog and made him keep it in the car and then get it cremated for her, I took the car the next morning, went in the boot to get my wellingtons and got the shock of my life!

Can totally see where your coming from, I don't think its controversial at all, I think if you can do it then you should, I only mentioned the vet if you thought it would be to hard for you, sorry hope I didn't offend you

Well, Allow me to say it a different way...They wont chop their own heads off.

One day it'll be an old hat for you, for example when I get a headache, I kill two at once and hold them to my temples while they quiver, ..brain massage

(JUST kidding)

Haha! Well I certainly hope they wouldn't chop their own heads off. Axe wielding, suicidal quails? Eek! And why do I get a mental image of Chuck Norris from what you said?

I have a lot of admiration for you
I know I couldn't do that, and I doubt I ever would.
Preparing it made me feel queezy

I guess I'm lucky I have local farmers of my husband that could cull any sick chickens
But like you I'd want to be sure it was done in the most humane way
Well done

Thanks. It was hard but I knew I had to do it. I felt responsible too. I helped to bring it into the world so I wanted to give it a quick end.

Not offended in the least Pinkaboo. The first weiner dog I mentioned was a vet trip...never again. That was rough.

I do know what you mean we had one 15 yr old boxer I had all my life put down at the vets, not nice
But the second dog the vet came to the house and was much better for the dog and us
I'm assuming you would shoot it? Can it be quick with a gun?
Obviously in the UK not many people have guns so its not something I know much about

Firing squads are still a lawful means of execution of human beings in some places, even some states in the US.
Firing squads usually consist of 4-5 riflemen with one rifle loaded with blanks, They aim for the heart.

A properly placed head shot can cause death before the victim hears the report.

No not yet.  Too busy.  I think Sunday, when we have time to look up a recipe and prepare a dish to sooth our conscience :)  I did hold one of the quails this morning with one hand and his neck with the other hand, DC;s style, and imagining doing it though.  I think I'm going to use a pair of scissors LOL.

What is DC's style? Does he just twist the head to break the neck? Or pull the head off completely? Something else?

Something I'm glad to have been warned about in a YouTube tutorial was the crunch when you cut through the neck, otherwise it's something I probably wouldn't have thought about and might've freaked me out.
