Culling older hens

Quote:
For a chicken to die, in the hands that it trusts, is one of the nicest things you can do for your bird - if you truely love it.

Loose, scared and running for its life in the wild with a predator chasing after the bird - heartless and mean.

Thank you all. Many of you brought me to tears...in a good way. What great advice, thoughts and support you have given me! Thank you for sharing your love of your birds and your respect for what they give our lives. I know my girls have been loved and cared for...we will make sure they are "taken care of" in a dignified and quick manner.

I love my BYC family!

You could always take them to a auction or offer them in your local newspaper. Not everyone cares about a chicken laying eggs they might just want some yard birds or yard candy. Theres nothing wrong having feelings for your animals not everyone is made for killing their dinner.

I like the saying "my animals have a great life and one really bad day". That's how we see it. That said, I usually don't handle my birds but had to pick up my old (seven years?) red hen last night. That girl weighs a TON! I plan to cull all my current layers this fall and am now kinda anticipating it
