Culling?

I didn't have the heart to cull my chicken (I know, it comes with the territory, and I need to toughen up.) It's my first time owning chickens and this one had scissor beak. I actually put an ad on Criagslist offering for someone to rescue it. I got a call in about an hour, and in two days, a woman who was willing to give her "special care" picked her up and took her home. willing to file her beak and feed her special mushy food.. This was an easy, stress free way for me to deal with the problem.

I had a Black Star that when her beak was ripped 1/2 off, I glued it with super glue and it stayed for 2yrs..it did sort of twist as it grew and I just put her in a towel and got out some heavy duty nail files and kept it even with the lower part of her beak. She was the boss til she got ill this year and died. I know how you feel .

Hi...a true chicken steward should know how to cull a chicken for the health, happiness, and continued success of their flock. Watching Youtube videos, and reading are wonderful, but I believe getting hands on experience can't be beat.

Look for a cooperative extension by you, or an AG organization for beginning farmers, one that offers field day classes on a farm. I learned how to cull chickens when I enrolled in a class offered by NOFA in my state. In fact, I culled a sick chicken this morning--sick for several days, quarantined, no sign of improvement--and am grateful for learning such a valuable skill. Also, if you learn on a farm, and watch others do it, you're less apt to hurt or maim the animal, too.

Good luck.
