Hello, every one.
Last week, Thursday I noticed my rooster, Rambo, had his right eye shut. I thought perhaps he had gotten dirt in his eye (I'm new to feather babies as an adult). So I put some water over his eye and he opened it, closed it again, then reopened. As if he was blinking whatever out. Other than that he seemed fine. He wandered a bit and laid in the shade under the coop.
Friday was about the same.
Saturday morning my husband went outside to check on him and as Rambo came closer to him, he collapsed. I immediately tried looking for a poultry vet. Most were not available on a Saturday, except one. She was a nice vet, but I can tell her experience was a little green with roosters. She couldn't figure out the problem. She spoke of putting him down but I cried (I have become attached to him) and she too felt for him and me. She treated him and sent us home with an ointment for his eye, antibiotics and dewormer.
He was pretty lethargic. He could barely hold his head up. We have kept him indoors since then and have been giving him his medicines along with some Electrolytes. It's been VERY hot here in FL.
His condition since then has slightly improved. He's able to hold his head up now. He does stand more. I am not sure how much a 12-14 week old Rooster should be eating, but he does eat and drink water. Even when he was not at his best he still managed to eat and drink some.
He still lays down a lot. Not sure if it's bc he's not feeling well still or bc he's bored being indoors. His eye unfortunately is still shut. I've read about eye worms. Not sure if that's his case since I don't see puss.
I will say that between a scale 1-10 he's at about 5-6 when before he was definitely at a 1.
Any advice in what it could be and what can I do that I haven't already done to help Rambo?
His antibiotics have finished as well as dewormer.
We've been checking on the Hens and they all are doing great. Still running around and being their sassy selves.
Sorry for the long post. Just wanted it to be well detailed. Thanks!
