Curious About Australorps?

aveca, I just have the one Australorp hen. I would love more.

My BA girl is the best forager in the bunch, and quietly keeps to herself while she's looking for goodies in the yard. However, she also mothers the other birds - - breaking up fights, cleaning faces, and occasionally delivering a gentle (or not-so-gentle) tap on the head for those naughty birds who deserve it. She knows the name I gave her, and she is just so sensible. I would like a whole flock of these chickens.

Oh NashChic . . . give me a shout in the spring, eh?

Well, take a visit to my website so you can watch the progress, I update everything every couple of months and have been and plan to continue putting everything online for others to gleen.

I really am excited too to get this mating underway, but early this year I let go of all my Aussies (most of whom have been eating by predators since

in their new homes) so I had to get new ones. I am hoping that a few of these girls are fairly hefty sizes, but I am good with working on an improved production type. Maybe the Orpington influence will help beef them up, but I'm not counting on it too much. Just letting this project unfold as it goes.

the gold lace project is quite complicated, as I have three different family lines and several generations to go before I might arrive at something one could refer to as a gold lace orpington. But it is a labor of love, because I just LOVE LOVE LOVE the look of those birds!

If you're hoping I get extras from my hatch... I'm hoping I get ANY to hatch! I started with 12 Andalusians and 12 Australorps. I tossed 10 Andies and 2 Aussies at day 7. I candle again Saturday... I've got my fingers crossed! These poor eggs had a terrible trip with the USPS and had detached air sacs. I'm only wanting to keep 2 pullets out of these, so if I get any extras they will be up for adoption (but not for a while)

BTW Jenski... I visited your blog. Have you been spying on me... a girl with a glass of wine, in a suburban backyard, surrounded by chickens? LOL... Kindred spirits, I guess.

Thanks for the article.

I'm finding it interesting that the breeds that interest me most after research, Delawares and Australorps, seem to be the ones whose standards emphasize that they are working chickens rather than lawn ornaments.

Which, I suppose, is why they haven't been multiplied into a flower garden of varieties.
