Curious about cross breeding

Sorry about that, I had thought the only possible options were blues barred & a buff orp. I see now where you said about the brahma & the RIR.....that makes sense. Well, if yopu hatch any, the brahma with the buff orp would probably look somewhat similar in colour, to the brahma with the RIR.

I have a question about cross breeding as well. We have a Brown-Red Ameraucana rooster, 2 Buff Laced Polish roosters, 4 Rhode Island White hens, 2 Black Minorca hens and 2 Silver-spangled Hamburgs. We would like to let the flock do some breeding, but are wondering what some of the traits might be if we do breed these combinations. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We are mainly wanting to know about the Ameraucana and the Rhode Island Whites.

Quote:
Ameraucana X RIW = white birds with muffs and beards, white skin and blue legs. Body type will be RIR like. Birds will leak some red- males in pyle region females on breast and head and hackles. Depending on the RIW and ameraucana genotype could be a small amount or could be a lot of the leaking red. Males may look like a red pyle but with some red on the chest.

Years of studying chicken genetics ( reading and analyzing research papers) and performing experimental crosses. I made a decision to know as much as I can about the subject. I also have a degree in biology, chemistry, and education and taught biology, chemistry and science research for 25 years.

Oh my, I don't have a chance in learning it all

, lol.

No, you can learn chicken genetics. Learn as much as you can about the breed and variety you work with. That is all you need to know unless you want to work with another breed, etc. You do not have to be an expert on every breed just be an expert on one bred and variety. Keep asking questions until you do not have any more questions to ask.

That is what I do- if I do not know something, I try to find the answer in the literature. If not, then I do some experimental crosses to try to find an answer. I have noticed that I find some answers in the literature that were not an objective of the research. Sometimes you have to put information from one paper together with information from another paper to see things. I do not expect others to do this because I have the education and time to do so. Then I can share my ideas with others. That is what science is about.

I am hoping my SLW Roo will cross with my GLW and give me some Blue Laced Reds?

Anyone have any luck with that? I won't try it for a while since my GLW pullet just layed her first egg but maybe in a year or so I will try it out! Right now I am just wanting eggs for breakfast!

Seriously, anyone know how to get blue laced reds - Is it a GLW Roo with a SLW hen?

Unfortunately, no. You need the parents to be BLR in order to get them.

Crossing a SL roo over a GL hen (for any breed) will result in SL pullets and off-colored cockerels (light golden color-ish.. hard to explain LOL). Same thing with a GL roo over a SL hen only the pullets will be GL.
