A friend suggested I join so I could gather info about possibly setting up a small backyard coop & run for maybe 4 chickens so that I can have eggs.

As a kid my folks had meat chickens but I never really dealt with any of that, but I have always thought as an adult to have just a couple chickens for eggs. I live in a small rural town in Kansas, many neighbors have chickens, so I know my town allows it. Now just to figure out where to begin so I do this right.

I have 2 dogs & 1 cat, and several 'neighborhood' cats to protect the chickens from. I plan to have my small coop inside my fenced yard so my dogs can help guard it for a little extra security.

Anyways, I will be looking through the group and possibly building a coop this year so I can be prepared for chickens next spring!

So, Melissa, welcome and you are in a GREAT place and are SO smart to be doing your research now, before you do things, buy things and make things that can’t easily or conveniently be undone when you change your mind, and you will.

If you haven’t already, take a minute to familiarize yourself with the scope of forums - there’s so much information here. And the articles. Especially now as you're planning your chick housing. There’s a plethora of tested ideas just waiting to inspire you.

You're wise to be thinking now about how your other domestic animals will fit in with the chicks and, no surprise, there’s lots of commentary on that, too, right here.

good luck!
