Curious question about male dogs

I had a male dog, that was never around other male dogs. He was not fixed. He lifted his leg to go after he matured. I disagree with the whole see other male dogs do it theory. He was semi dominant.

I currently have a male mastiff mix that was fixed at 18 months when he was turned into rescue.. so it was late, He is 3 yrs now, and generally will squat to go, but will lift his leg on occassion. He also has not been around other males to see them go. He is semi dominant.



Could it be because of the confidence level of the dog? Thats my theory. Dog's that have low confidence, don't like getting up on things, which require their feet off the ground. We used to use climbing on things, and walking on unsteady things, to build confidence in dogs. Some temperment tests for dogs involve odd surfaces as part of the test (ATTS) When I had puppies, we had their play yard full of "unsteady" things they could walk and climb on.

I have asked a number of people about this, as my (neutered) 8 mo. lab shows nooooooo sign of clueing in to the leg lift (although it'd be in his best interest, as he really dislikes it when he accidentally pees on the backs of his front feet

).

Have been told all of the abovementioned things. Also that in a few cases (and I'm sure not yours) it is an early sign of hip problems.

But am posting mainly to note that one long-time pro dog trainer, and one vet, both say they have intact males who spent lots of time around other leg-lifting males and they just never DID learn to do it. Trainer and vet both say they have absolutely no idea why.

So I think sometimes it just IS kind of mysterious. THey're dogs. So, who knows

first in line, a cavalier king charles male neutered at 6 months, a leg cocker.. just not a good one!

second in line, american cocker male, neutered at 6 months; always a squater ....

third in line, 10 year old rescue german shepherd, came from an only dog house, neutered when we got him at 10 years; always a leg cocker

fouth in line, border collie, adopted from an only dog home at three months, neutered at 6 months; always a cocker.... and a one upmanship for peeing over the others pee.

first in line has been put down as a result of accident so when last guy came in he is now number 4 not 5 ....

3 year old german sherpherd.... also a rescue dog, neutered when we got him; mostly a leg cocker, occasional squater though I beleive that to be lazy rather than anything.

Years ago I had a medium sized fuzzy mutt. SHE would occasionally, back up to a tree, climb part way up the tree with her back legs and pee on it.

I know off topic but it fits with strange peeing scenarios.

Hubbys dog, now 14 shepherd/lab mix, neutered at 6months. Still squats.

Yeah, I'm not sure I can go with the learned behavior thing as he obviously sees big brother Jax lift his leg and it hasn't made an impression on him.
I guess I'll go with the immaturity angle. I mean, other than knowing his commands, Kane still acts like an eight week old puppy.

My MIL has a male pug that they had altered at 6 months old and he has always squatted to pee... He is 3 years old now.
