Hello all, I have searched this site and haven’t found an answer so I am posting to see if I can get some help. I have a 2 day old chick that was stuck in its shell so I had to help it out a bit. Yesterday I noticed it’s outside toe pointing out words, it seems to be getting worse as it’s now at a 90 degree angle. I also noticed last night that it’s back toe is also curled about 90 degrees. I feel like I need to correct that as I don’t know if it will be able to perch well if left untreated. I have seen where others tape the front toes, can I tape the back toe as well? What else can I do? Thank you for any thoughts on the subject.

Welcome to BYC! :frow

Do whatever you are gonna do RIGHT away, while the bones are still pliable.

Back toes don't seem nearly as important to me... Silkie back toes don't even touch the ground as far as I can tell.

A good place to start with instructions..

I would also use nutri drench in the water in case the curled toes are a nutrient deficit.

Since I breed... I personally would cull... reason being I don't want deformities in my stock... and even what SEEMS to be from hatch difficulty can in fact be genetic. And as you note, left uncorrected some things can become very uncomfortable later in life.

Difficult decisions. Good luck! :fl

Hi there.

I had a chicken with both feet having curled toes.

I used masking tape... i laid his toes on the tape, moved them into correct position of how they should sit, leaving the back one free, and then put the tape over the top to make a bootie on each foot. Leave on four 48hrs.

Google chick curled toes masking tape and a few tutorials come up. My ones toes are not perfect but he can now walk on the right part of his foot, not on the sides of his feet.
