curly toes, walking on hock-help-UPDATE & ?'s post #6

Hocked feet

One of my almost two week old baby chicks seemed to have developed this suddenly on Sat.

I checked on the chicks frequently, then late that afternoon one was on its side in a pile of other chicks, (she is much smaller and not developing as fast as the others) she is hock walking

I began Poly Sol Vites liquid on Monday without Iron, she has been eating , drinking and moving in a smal lcat carrier in our downstairs bathroom , I will give her a few more days and ifno improvement I will have her p ut to sleep, I do not trust the other chicks not to peck her to death due to her deformity

It may have been in injury,
Several times a day I do range of motion, stretching etc.

I had a couple of chicks lately who had a bad start to walking. One of the things I found was this sponge method for spraddle leg http://www.parrotparrot.com/splay/ . Depending on the depth of the sponge, it may hold the legs in the position you are after. Easier than taping feathered legs, too. Some of these chicks just start off a bit "floppy" and walk better as they gain co-ordination and strength, while others really do have the problems we worry about, I think.

Good luck.

My chicks were doing fine but 2 of them developed curly toes and cannot stand upright after almost 3 weeks of hatching. Can it be a case of injury? And if so, how do I help them? I have splint their feet with perforated tape but can I do anything to help them stand upright?
