Hi, I live in NW Pa and have previously had a few chickens (down to one sweet barred rock) and we’ve decided to raise some chicks to increase the flock. We have 9 two and a half week old chicks- two barred rocks, two Rhode Island Reds, two black giants, one Creve Coeur, one leg horn and a mystery chick which we think might be some type of Polish hen. Everyone is doing great! The adult barred rock (Abilene) is curious but for now we have the chicks on a small pen within the chicken house. There is a fully enclosed large run outside of the chicken house so the girls are pretty safe. I’m considering letting them free range a few days a week when the time is right, but if not, the run is plenty big. We are waiting for the right time to let them meet Abilene. Any thoughts on when we can start considering it?

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

I usually don't mix in chicks with adults until they are at least 3 months old. Too young and they can get injured or broken bones from larger older birds. Chicks need to be old enough to defend themselves. You definitely want to keep them caged around adult birds by week 5 or 6 so they can all start to get to know one another.

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours!

Hi and welcome to BYC, I think you could consider free range from about four weeks of age
