Don't know where you are but if you can use the Stall Dri from TSC or the Sweet PDZ from a horse supply place and sprinkle it under the pen it will help so much with your problems. 40 lbs will cost you 10 to $15 at the most and is more available than de. Take a handful, mix it in with the topsoil and every few days when you notice a smell, do it again. Then clean it up once a week or whenever you feel it needs to be done. I use sweet PDZ and it can be composted without hurting the worms, I don't know about the others.

I would sprinkle the sweet pdz all over the run for the smell, it will dry the poop and when the poop is dry the flies will disappear.

4. There are terrible hords of flies on the chicken poo that is under the metal cage. I move the cage around inside of the dog pen to avoid concentrating the poo and I scoop it up and compost it with the dog poo on a daily basis.

You compost dog poop?

I'd be very concerned about putting your dog in with your chickens and vice versa. They can pick up things from one another (worms for one)- and should absolutely not be housed together. All types of nasties in chicken poop.....

not to mention - does your dog come in the house? Do you wash him off completely before he comes into the house each time he's out there in the pen with them?

Thats a huge concern for me....

I use sand and perectrin dust and that is
a time saver no mites no lice and no smell ...So far.
But I am planning on using AG lime in the coop its a cost saver.

I thought of this but wasn't sure if it would hurt the chickens when they do their chicken thing and eat everything. Thanks I will have to run and get some of this.

i did this around my doors so flys dont come in the house, it works pretty good untill your preschooler becomes fascinated by it, finds something to stand on and pops the baggys repeatedly. i ended up just using the fly tape, it works good too.

and imo dog poo attracts WAY more flys than a few chickens.
