Curved Beak a problem?

Hello! My fiancé and I inherited 2 peacocks when we bought some property last fall. One of the boys has a very long curved beak and it does look like he has a hard time picking up feed because of it, at least on hard surfaces. My fiancé thinks we need to try to trim it and is worried about it preventing him from eating. Is this true? Do we need to try to trim or file it? Thank you!!!

It probably needs trimmed. The key to trimming anything be it beaks or nails is to do it very slowly and carefully. The top half of the beak should be just a little longer than the bottom. You should be abke to see the live beak tissie, it is darker, trim nearly to that but don't cut into it. Have some cornstarch nearby in case you do accidentally trim live tissue, it will help stop the bleeding.

It is better to cut too little than too much!
At the end of the beak there are sensitive cells that allow peacocks to taste things! By transparency we see where the veins are.

I had to trim two cocks today. Most of my pens have the food dish on concrete blocks so the birds can file their beaks but these two pens do not. It is always a good idea to make sure the cocks beaks are trimmed before the breeding season so he will be more sure to hold on while trading.

Thank you all so much!

Yes one of our peacocks I have seen scraping his beak on the concrete in our driveway and his is not as long. Not sure why this older one doesn’t. Thanks so much!
