As I recall, about 1 in 6 armadillos found in the coastal areas of LA and TX carry Hansen's disease (leprosy). You can contract the disease from contact with them, but it is relatively rare. Interestingly, armadillos are model organisms for studying Hansen's disease. Female armadillos always give birth to identical quadruplets, which is quite useful when studying the disease. Plus, there are fewer things cuter than a baby armadillo.
