D^v in Silkies?

Quote:
Walnut comb with spikes (aka horns) is actually the addition of D^v (duplex aka v-comb) to R (rose) and P (pea) comb genes.

As was said earlier, the spikes/horns were required a number of years ago; however, they are now considered a defect. It is common to find them present in silkies, regardless of whether they come from hatchery or show stock. Show breeders select away from them, but it is not a huge enough defect, so by itself is not usually enough to cull from the breeding pen.
