Da' Cute and Cuddly Call Duck thread!

I had a welsh harlequin get his eye severely damaged at a few weeks old. I just washed it with clear water & put a dap of neosporin (no painkiller) on/in it once daily for 3-4 days until it started to look better. He was very obviously blind in that eye but it never got infected or matted up. He did fine in the pen, but I never tried to free range him.

I also acquired an adult pekin pair in which the drake was blind in 1 eye. He & the female were closely bonded. She always stayed on his blind side & would bump him to turn him if she wanted him to move away from something.
W0w great on her part. Intelligence too.

Right? It's so endearing to see her look out for her man, hehe. It's amazing how intelligent they can be! Ducks get a bad rap, everyone thinks they're stupid, but they can be quite clever when they want to. :p I hope Ledge's drake continues to improve, the poor guy. At the very least, I hope he's not in pain anymore. Although I must admit, the head tilt action is always adorable!

the head tilts are adorable, I agree. It is too bad so many people think ducks aren't smart but I have heard enough and seen enough to know for a fact that they are so much the opposite of that.

Yup! <3 I do feel bad speaking up for duckie intelligence however, when I've raised chickens and feel that those birds ARE dumber than a box of rocks, hehe! I'm sure not all chickens are stupid, but the ones I had sure were, you'd look into their eyes and there was nothin' there. Or maybe they just weren't playing with a full deck, I dunno.

But ducks? You look into their eyes and they look right back atcha, they even have object permanence! I'd hide a bag or treats from the hens and they'd get all sorts of confused before wandering away. But ducks? Hide the bag and they run to your backside and start leaping at your jacket hem trying to knock 'em loose, hehe!

Aaah, how sweet and knowing they are. I wonder why there's such a difference in brain function between the 2 species. I love how interactive ducks are with it their owners. My buddy has told me many stories about his girls.

Hehe, yeah...I remember the first time I tried to play peek-a-boo with Wobbles. He was sitting on my chest, I put my hand up in front of my face, and he just crouched underneath, stuck his head out from under my hand and went "wak!" That's when I knew I had a special little guy. :p

Oh my word, that just gave me chills reading this, Amykins. Peeked under your hand. That is so sweet and incredible. You two have such a strong connection and I believe it goes beyond the imprinting.

My experience has been the opposite. I have chickens & turkeys that are closely bonded, come looking for us, search us for food & treats, hop into our arms to be carried around, perch on our shoulders, etc. The ducks, not so much. They tend to run from us & really don't even eat the treats we give them. It may just be a bonding issue. My ducks go outside asap due to the mess they make, chicks & turkeys stay in a little longer & tend to get handled more as babies.
