Da' Cute and Cuddly Call Duck thread!

Oh no, I'm so sorry! Are you sure there isn't another drake that could use another home instead? I know that sounds heartless, but it seems like you're super attached to the lil' guy.

No, not in the blue fawns. We have only two blue fawn drakes. One is a top show quality that's still very clumsy in mating because he's so small, and the other is a top show quality breeder.

It doesn't sound at all heartless. It's just what "breeders" do, and I really struggle with this thing between being a breeder and wanting pets as well. It seems like the ones I get with the best personalities are never the best quality ones for show and breeding. My second favorite one is from one of the ones I got from Jim, and it has black feathers scattered here and there. I started calling it Pebbles a couple weeks ago, and naming them is a big mistake if you don't plan to keep them.

Oh, he sounds simply gorgeous! I wish I could take him in, but Wobbles isn't keen on sharing. :p I guess I just got super lucky, Wobbles is high quality and he's got a great personality (when he's not biting and acting like a - well, a drake!).

Part of me feels a bit guilty that I'm not seeking out white females for him to breed with, he'd make a great pillar for any SQ line of whites; his bill isn't the shortest but it's just barely within standard, nice and broad, and his keel and leg placement are nearly perfect. If not for his being pigeon-toed, he'd be one hell of a show ring contender. But he's my pet first and foremost, you know?

Yes, I know. Most of the ones I've gotten so far this year aren't "keepers" for breeding even overall, plus a little more than half are drakes. We sexed all the outdoor ones last week so we could band them, and I was more than a little disappointed that so many turned out to be male. We're going to sex the indoor ones tomorrow just to get all the current banding out of the way since we still have eggs in the bator.

This is a not very good pic of the little guy I was talking about. I had to separate him from the rest to get the pic, so he was in motion most of the time. I didn't want to keep him separated any longer since they get so upset over that.

Wow, what a round head he's got! Is he from the same batch that gave you that duckling with the insanely puffy cheeks?

I'm not sure because I can't remember which one that was. This one was from the blue fawn show ducks. HIs cheeks are pretty puffy, but I couldn't get a good front shot without somebody holding him. You can clearly see the green coming out in that pic. I don't know if it just started recently or if I hadn't paid particular attention since they typically all go out at once. It's a terrible disappointment. I haven't sexed the ones in the indoor brooder, but I had convinced myself this one was female. Not because I had a reason to believe it was female, but just because I really wanted it to be female. Blah.

Oh my, he's so darn cute. I am touched by him. I don't think I could keep my hands off him. Sweet little being

I hate to barge in here and make the attention be on me, but

I GOT MY GIRLLLLSSSS!!!! :ya :weee :ya :weee

After that rude girl played games and screwed me over about a billion times, I finally found some somewhere else. They aren't that bad of quality either. A heck of a lot nicer than hers. *puffs out chest*

HERE THEY ARRRREEEE!!!!!!

The run I had to catch them in was VERY muddy, they were covered.

When we got them home, one slipped out of my hands and ran out the garage door. The dogs started chasing her and she FLEW AWAY. I started running after her screaming and bawling like a maniac with no shoes on through the neighbors (that don't particularly like us, they have 9 huskies but that's a different story for a different time) yards. I crashed an outside family dinner of neighbors I've never met. So eventually we gave up looking, my dad leaves to go groundhog hunting and calls and says she's in the neighbor's yard the opposite direction which she flew. We surrounded her, I dove at her with a fishing net, she started to fly, and my dad does this literal NINJA DIVE, CATCHES HER IN THE AIR, and hits the ground (but didn't hurt the duck). It was the most amazing catch I've ever seen, football games included.

So needless to say her wings got clipped the second I got her back to the house along with everyone else and they went in the tub to clean themselves off.

The hard part was picking which one to give to our friend. We drove to Ohio today and got them. 4 for us, 1 for them. We originally were going to get 3, but there was a cute lil gal that we just had to get. We named her Ming Ming (after the Wonderpet). We already have a Tuck, so now naturally we need a Linny. It was so hard to pick which one to give to my friend, but I chose one eventually. One looks kinda young but over mated, so we saved her. I'd say she's a few months old and already her head and neck feathers are sparse and has irritated skin underneath. She's such a sweet thing.

Okay, enough is enough. I could type until my thumbs fell off... I love my 4 new girls. :)

I'll get some individuals of everyone sometime during the week so you guys can see how old they are.
