Da' Cute and Cuddly Call Duck thread!

They aren't hard to clip, but we don't clip any of ours. Watching them fly is almost always the best part of my day.

Oh man, I just couldn't do it. I'd be too paranoid about them flying off. The poor little babies just can't survive out in the wild! Plus Bean is so skittish I think it would have just been a matter of time before she flew the coop.

You have a different situation. Our ducks live outside and know where they live. They fly around the property, but never beyond it. They really don't go far. They don't take to the air and fly away like migratory birds do, at least not after they know where home is.

It's never easy for me. The group before the last group was really hard. I somewhere along the way got into the habit of calling them my angels. I think it wasn't so much that group themselves but me who made them into my angels. I worked with them all the time, more than most, and I could open their brooding pen and they would either climb onto my lap or gather around me to listen to me sing and tell stories. They were pretty much as obedient as ducks can be, and our little Sklyar came out of that group. She loves being outdoors though because she flies and flies and flies.
Eeeeee, little Skylar.

Yep! It's the backup plan! Plus from what I've seen looking through the local (or somewhat local) ads on craigslist these birds have the roundness and tiny bills that I love. A lot of the adult calls that I've looked at didnt. So hopefully they would pass that down to their offspring. :)
Yah, Roundness. Call Ducks of Roundness. Love squeeze.

The older ones can be shipped, just not ducklings. It's just not the right time of year. The weather needs to be cool when ducks are shipped because of the heat that can build up in the shipping boxes through both the outdoor heat and the heat the ducks themselves produce.
Okay, that makes sense. I feel bad for them at the thought of being shipped. I can't imagine how scary it would be for them. Shuffling around in a dark box for a day. Although once they get to a good home I'm sure it would be worth it.

It has to be very scary, but they're not in totally dark boxes. The ones that are used for shipping poultry have fairly large holes on the sides for air circulation.

We found a few adult calls on craigslist today. They have 6 drakes and 5 hens. I figured we could get a pair a maybe have babies in the spring... Hopefully we can go see them today. They hubby was all for it when I thought it was only an hour drive but then I found out it was 2 and 1/2 hours away... I'm hoping he still wants to go. :( This is the one I have my eye on so far...
