Da' Cute and Cuddly Call Duck thread!

Poor little pebbles lol he is so small that his wings weigh him down and make him so unblanced. today he would get up then fall to his left then balance and then lean to his right it took him 5 minutes to balance out his wings , I really hope he grows into them

LOL yeah...poor guy. Wobbles would do the same, after bathtime his wing would get so waterlogged he'd drag them around and wound up looking like a sulking teenager!

Ugh, these kids...this morning, Bean did her usual morning "come hither" routine, putting her head in the water cup (still doesn't get that yes it's water but it's the WRONG KIND of water) and Wobbles, after a few false starts, actually managed to grab her in the right spot and got in proper position! ...only for Bean to rocket forward sending him tumbling off.

It'd be funny if it weren't so awkward to watch.

Now there's a question - do drake feathers have a direct correlation to hormones? 'Cuz Wobbles has NONE! He had one when he first came of age, but I dunno if he's just in the longest molt ever, the diaper he wears turned it straight or what, but he's got no tail curl at all. How's that for strange?

I don't know but I looked up drake feather someplace (don't remember where) and they said 1 or 2 curly feathers. Tevye had 1 and Kaine had 3 (1 straight up and 1 to each side) so I don't know if there is a real hormone correlation, but in my flock there sure is

I don't think it's an indication of hormones, or at least I can't remember ever reading that it is. We have one little 2015 guy who has 4 of them. Hubby and I were looking at him last weekend and I told the hubby I was tempted to take a pic of the drake and start a 'show your drake feathers' thread. He's only about 5 months old, and all his little feathers don't just stick up; they curl around over his back like they've been done with a curling iron.

Oh dear. That looks like a pretty substantial case of split wing. I would wrap that immediately if I were you. If you let it continue, it probably won't be fully correctable later on. Not that it will damage the bird's health, because it won't, but it will likely never be able to fly. (Some people might consider that a benefit, but it's still better to clip to prevent flying than to have it prevented by a wing disorder.)

Funny, I had heard of ducks developing a drake feather in the absence of a drake (usually the dominant one) and they would be the ones to mount the other ducks. I wonder if it was just timing? Was #4 fairly dominant? Maybe she "decided" to take over the flock and by the time her feather manifested, Bean was already there...

OK, who is the super rich person on these forums who can fund an independent study on the significance and formation of the "drake" feather. If I curl several of Tevye's tail feathers with a curling iron will he get more aggressive? If I straighten Kaine's will he mellow out? What if I just yank them out? Inquiring minds want to know.

If I don't get rid of a lot of these ducks, I'll be able to pay you in eggs 5-6 months from now if you can wait that long.

I demand to see coiffed birdy butt!

Amykins says Bean does the joker laugh too. I would be startled at night as well.

Do you think Henry will calm down towards you with winter or will his hormones cause him to act as he does with you permanently? I mean, he is so cute and I imagine you would wanna hold him like Jack does?

Eeeee, they get excited. How cute that is. Smart little puffs know what is up.
Honestly, I have no idea if he will calm down or if this his permanent attitude towards me. I hope he goes back to his sweet self but it doesn't matter either way. I pick him up anyway. He settles down when I do and just sits there with his dangly feets. :)
