Da' Cute and Cuddly Call Duck thread!

duck with botulism is weirdly laying. I found out when I lifted her to give her a wash (because she can't control her legs she ends up laying in poop, there was no poop but there was an egg stuck to her feathers. She is supporting her head and has started to take little sips of fluids on her own. I have real hope for her recovery. I'm not sure what to do with the egg though I'm pretty sure toss it might be the answer I don't think its safe to eat or hatch.

And I love that you ask... :)

Some people won't eat fertilized eggs, it is a personal choice... some feel it's just 'icky' or goes against beliefs or lifestyles, etc... but all fertilized is that a boy has added an extra cell to the egg and given it the potential to become an embryo... it takes 2 or 3 days of constant, consistent proper warmth for the embryo to develop... and then it uses the yolk as its food and growth source... make sense?

And I love your analogy... fertilized eggs can be viable for a couple weeks and up to a month, so if you found a fertile egg outside you could try incubating it... some people have found eggs and done that... ;)

Edited for spelling, lol...
Thank you it totally makes sense. I find it all fascinating. Truthfully I don't think I could eat one either. I wonder if I have cuz I eat so many eggs and I know a hen lays without a roo but you never know.

What kills me is that if you extracted that halo thing with the male/female contribution in it and examined it under a microscope you'd see cells. It is such an amazing and wonderful process. Like the cells have DNA/genes in them that are devoted to specific body parts and processes. My fave gene is the one that makes the webs.

That is amazing. Finding an egg and incubating. X days later and you have a sweet little surprise.

I love science!!

Bless you. I am glad she has hope for recovery and she's ingesting small amounts of fluids. Sweet thing.

Sorry @Fizzgig are you giving her some activated charcoal to munch? (I don't know how much but I know I have seen it before for detox and specifically for botulism). Hope she gets better.

Hope your duck makes full recovery @Fizzgig I'd ask vet before using any of these if he has given her something already.
She's had an anti toxin she doesn't need a flush but thank you for the suggestion. I do have her on electrolyte and vitamin fortified water to keep her hydrated. mostly she's sitting in the dark and quiet to reduce stress. She's a wild duck so the best thing I can do is make sure she doesn't starve or dehydrate while she recovers.
