Daddy and son roos suddenly switch ranks after six years of a cordial relationship

In nature, a mature red junglefowl cock will preside over a set territory of a few hundred square yards and a harem of hens. He may rule it alone or with a brother he grew up with. If he ever shows weakness, the brother or a young cock from outside the flock may challenge him for dominance. The loser will either be killed or run off. Wild turkeys have a similar social order, except that their territories can consist many square miles that it might take days to cross, as opposed to a junglefowl’s small patch of forest. Game chickens also live similarly to the junglefowl if left to their own devices, except the fights will most certainly be to death or serious injury when they happen.

Sounds like Strawberry and Toots are exhibiting a distant echo of that wild behavior.
