Dadgumbit...bumblefoot....*Update, looking for advice*

Can you try to remove the plug from on top of the foot? If the bump is between the toes, and pushing towards the top of the foot, sometimes lancing the top will allow it to come out. I'd continue soaking with the warmest water and epsom salts that wouldn't burn, but be more than luke warm.

I would have tried the same salve that you did! We have it for the horses, and it does draw infection. Maybe lance the top, and put some it on there.

Hope that helps you some!!

BTW, can you get a pic of it?

And remember, bumblefoot is caused by staph infection. Make sure to wear gloves, or wash your hands really well. Wash anywhere else that the 'gunk' gets on as well.

As a nurse, I cringe when I hear staph infection. It's not a good thing for a person to get!

Sometimes I think posts don't get answered because the same thing is posted by other users every day. When I first joined, I tried answering all the posts in this forum, and even started a thread with several websites posted that people could quick and easily look up symptoms and ways to treat. The thread was answered by several other posters with more information. Unfortunately, when someone has a sick or injuried chicken, they are frantic, and don't bother looking to see if anyone else had dealt with the same thing. Instead they start a new post, and people just get tired of typing the same answers. So therefore either the posts get unanswered, or a new member will start answering them, get burned out on repeating themselves, and boom, continous cycle.

Most anything that has happened to a person's flock has happened to someone else, and has been posted here several times. A quick search will provide the answer to the majority of the concerns on this forum.

Brown eyes, I have also had problems with bumblefoot. I have a hen that we thought we had cured several times, but it keeps coming back. I really don't think she will ever be well.

Thinking about the cause of the problem, I suggest you eliminate goat heads from your chicken yard. Goat heads are those sticker weeds that ruin your bicycle tires. No matter which way they land, the seed has a thorn pointing up.

The seeds seem to last forever. The best way to get rid of them is to wet down the chicken yard and let them germinate, then eliminate the plant before it can produce seeds.

Getting rid of trash in the yard helps also.

Good Luck,

Rufus
