A kicker isn't necessary with a well trained milk cow.
Pasture fed dairy cows DO NOT need supplimental grain. A proper balanced pasture diet and milk yields do not suffer.
Leaving calf on the mother is our prefered method. Once again, comes down to training and handling.
No doubts dairy animals tie you down more than almost any other animal. I have no idea how people deal with a dairy animal that work 9-5 jobs. Unless they single milk.
