Damaged Eye in Rooster

A neighbor found a rooster in her yard and I have taken him in. We have a lot of free roaming chickens in our neighborhood (I live in Puerto Rico). There is still plenty of cock fighting here and the neighbor thinks maybe he was injured in a fight. His left eye looks damaged/blind but not so much his right eye. He hasn't moved around a lot and I have been feeing him and making sure he drinks water which he does after I help him find the bowl. I raised chickens before but have no flock or coop as of right now. The rooster is hanging out in our backyard (There are no predators that could get to him) and I am keeping an eye on him. I know it's hard to tell in photos, but does it look like I could nurse him back to health or sight if I get antibiotics or is it too far damaged?

Thanks for any advice!

Welcome To BYC

Looks like the left eye may be lost, but really hard to tell. I do see some yellow crust and pus in that eye, so you will want to clean and treat it.

The right eye is a bit sunken, could be from respiratory illness, put the pupil is an odd shape. Can you get a clearer more direct photo of the right one?

General care for the eye, I would rinse it with saline (you can make your own or purchase it), remove pus/crusty matter, etc. Put an eye ointment in the eye like Terramycin eye ointment or if you can't find that, then plain triple antibiotic ointment can be put into the eye. Do this a couple of times a day if possible, to help the eye heal.

As for oral antibiotics, they may not be needed, but if you feel he needs them, then look for Tylan/Tylosin or a Tetracycline. Where you live there may be some combo meds like AmTyl or Premoxil - ask at your local feed shop what they have, they will probably have some packets. Follow the dosing on the packets.

What are you feeding him?

He's handsome. Do you have a photos of all of him?
