dancing rooster

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Your rooster's dance is a very common thing with roosters when they are attempting to exert their dominance. Do keep a close eye on him though. If he becomes aggressive, you will need to get rid of him. Not only do you not want to risk him injuring someone (like putting out an eye), but you don't want to breed aggression into your flock. There are always loads of unwanted roosters available (including some gentle ones) which owners are trying to re-home. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your rooster.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I would keep an eye on him. Sounds like he is starting to think he is above you in the pecking order. He could go off on you. So just be careful. You might want to remove his spurs if need be.

Enjoy your boy and welcome to our flock!

I just want to add to the previous posts. They all have good advice, but I would like to add to please do your homework before removing the spurs or rehoming the rooster. I have tons of chickens and tons of roosters. They are all different. I have had to butcher a very beautiful roo that I had intended on breeding. He was just too aggressive.

I have also caged a roo for 2 weeks to "reset his attitude" because he spurred me two days in a row when I was carrying feed out to them. It works sometimes and thankfully it worked with him.

My flock has been attacked by raccoons, mink, dog and rats. Not to mention sometimes attacking each other. My roosters put them in check. We have seen the main rooster fight off the rats, raccoons and break up many of fights between hens as well as other roosters.

I'm not saying you should let the rooster hurt you or anyone else. Roosters are a different world. If you have any other questions, feel free to let us know.
