Dang it..LICE!

Thank you so much for the helpful advice. We have been waiting for the gals to start laying for an eternity. Now that they are, we have this issue pop up. So darn disappointing. However, I do want them healthy, and bug free. If I do the Ivermectin, should I Wazine as well? Or will the Ivermectin handle it all? I know, newbie questions...but I have to learn.

Normally I'd recommend the wazine first. But you're dealing with pests that you've actually seen...I recommend you go ahead and use the ivermectin, it's a safe wormer and delouser. Save the wazine for another time. Rotation of wormers is recommended anyway, to prevent worm immunity to any one wormer. Lol. Dont worry about the newbie questions, we all started out the same way. Pretty soon you'll be helping others as well.

Piperazine (Wazine is a brand) is effective against certain types of roundworms; it has no effect on other types of worms. Ivermectin is a very broad spectrum wormer; about the only ones it is not effective on are tapeworms. In general, piperazine is considerably milder (less effective) than ivermectin. If the bird has a heavy worm load, you should first worm with piperazine, then a week or two later worm with a more effective wormer such as ivermectin or fenbendazole.

Ivermectin is effective against mites, lice and most biting bugs as well. It will not kill the eggs, however. Depending on the number of birds you have, I usually recommend baths in a dog or cat flea/tick shampoo that contains an insect growth regulator. Pay particular attention to removing the eggs and/or plucking the feathers near the vent. Thoroughly spray the coop with an insecticide designed for animal premises. Take particular care to get it in all cracks and crevasses. Replace bedding and mix in sevin or permethrin dust. Make sure nest boxes have sevin or permethrin dust mixed in as well. DE is an absorbant, and will help keep the bedding dry. It may help with insects by dessicating them. It has absolutely no effect as a wormer. It is safe to feed, and wil result in dryer poop.

The reason for the typically given withdrawal time of two weeks (for eggs) is that that is about how long it takes for a hen to develop an egg. If a medicine is effective in the birds body for longer than two weeks, then you need to increase the withdrawal time to correspond. Assuming that it is something that should not be ingested by humans. Personally, I would rather eat an egg that might contain ivermectin or another wormer than one that might be infected with worms.

If you want to avoid withdrawal times, consider using eprinex, a closely related product that has no withdrawal time.

I went to TSC and all they had was a huge jug of the Ivermec for $55.

I have 7 chickens. That would not be very cost effective. I have never given a chicken a bath, and was hoping that the Ivermec would be the way to go. The permethrin dust I have says not to put it in nesting material. Feeling a bit frustrated at the moment.

Brings up a question of mine: how do you give a chicken a bath? I've never done it either and I can't imagine the chaos. Mine are very hand-tamed but I would think my attempting to put them in a sink with water to attempt to bathe them will result in more water all over me and the kitchen rather than the bird! And what about after? Do you blow-dry them? More chaos, LOL!

Hey! I have tons left from my bottle!! Hubby has to go to belchertown..i think on friday... want him to bring you the bottle to use? He can drop it off at TSC.
Just use it like i said..(1/2 cc each bird).. then wait 10 days.. and use again...
then well pick it back up from you at TSC when your done with it...
sound good... ?
I Know.. it IS a huge bottle for the little that we use on chickens....
this way we can both get use out of the bottle and it wont go to waste!

Not sure exactly when.. sorry! Cause hes working 10 hour days in Milford right now.. sooo it all depends on pike traffic.. blah..
He gets into palmer around 6:30ish... so... maybe 7:15ish at TSC??
What he can do though.. is... just drop off the bottle at the front desk/register and tell them that its for you and you'll be picking it up?? Will that work?

He maaay be able to get there tonight too... which would be easier since you'll be working... so... i'll talk to him when he calls later.
If he dosent show up there tonight.... he'll just bring it tomorrow.. okay?

That'll be great. Thank you , and your hubby both so much. If I do not see him there tonight, I'll let someone know that he will be dropping it off for me tomorrow night. I can't say thanks enough. I will make it up to you though. Gotta run. Take care.
