YUCK! Yeah, now thats a snake!

I noticed there is a gap around the door that he could have got in through. I closed that gap, and another potential place, so hopefully I will not get any more visitors!!

btw, does my little nightcrawler story gain fortitude given I am a she?

Sorry to hear about your bird losses.

I'm another reptile lover and former commercial breeder of reptiles & amphibians. While I hate to see them killed you gotta do what's necessary to protect your stock. I found out quite by accident a few years ago that you can trap alive most species of snakes by placing some minnow traps around your yard. These are the cylindrical type with the inverted cone shaped opening on each end.

Never needed any bait. The snakes wander in and can't seem to find their way out for a day or two. I end up either relocating the snakes or giving them to friends who still breed snakes.

BTW corn snakes (AKA red rat snakes) feed primarily on rats and mice but will readily take birds if the others aren't available. I've seen them wipe out a whole nest of baby rats in one sitting. I've also caught some big ones that had some nasty rat bites from tangling with the mama rats.

eel pots work too if you have a seafood industry nearby watermen sell them a fair amount cheaper then the stores fish or mice in a small bait box serve well as bait
