I can't believe this.
We buried PepperAnne and Hawk 17 days ago. A coon had killed them.
Occasionally I go to the grave to say hi. I went this morning and they're gone!!
This is the first time that's ever happened. We've burried 7 other chickens around there and this has never happened before. We bury them about 18" down and cover the graves with fencing and put logs over it.
The logs were moved and they dug on the outside of the fencing.
Dangit. Its like losing them all over again.
At least they took 2 dead ones and not 2 more live ones.
Those coons are going crazy this year.

We buried our dog Molly in April. I sure hope she's still there. She's back in the woods further.
I guess we need to use more fencing and more logs the next time.

I've had foxes digging up stuff.
I had to hide a poptart box we used to bury my daughter's parakeet. Found the box, but no bird to re-bury. She would have freaked if she knew it had been dug up.
In fact, the only time I've seen foxes in our yard is after we've buried something. Last summer I saw one in the early evening sniffing around a groundhog grave, about 10 yards away from my occupied chicken tractor. Sent chills up my spine!

We have something actually trying to dig up all the dead coons. They haven't gotten to them my husband buries them really deep.

Anytime we have to bury a pet...we put lime over the "grave" We have never had one dug up. Try it..it stops the odor, and the preds dont dig em up. So sorry about loseing your pets, for the second time.

we put some really heavy rocks or logs over it.

i have a hilarious story about my evil MIL's stupid dead poodle and how he wasnt buried quite so deep. still trying to figure out if this is too much of a family show to post it..

anyway - bury deep, put something over it, have the dogs mark around it.

Thanks everyone,
We've never had things dug up before (other than plants.........lots of plants)......but I'm wondering if the difference this time was that the chickens that I buried (I buried the 2 together), were bloody. Maybe that put out a bigger scent??
Briana........it wouldn't surprise me if coons were trying to dig up your coons! I think if I had a dead coon, I'd leave it out somewhere (far from the house/coop) and feed the turkey vultures! I like turkey vultures.
Thanks for the tip about the lime. Do I just buy garden-type lime?
I swear, these coons are crazy this year.

We buried Dumpling, our BR who died in March, down about 2 feet, and put a concrete paver on top of her. We were afraid of something trying to dig her up (we live in the city), and neither of us wanted to deal with the emotions of experiencing that.
