Dangerous question

I am down to 11 -9 week olds from a not so good situation. I had 15 mixed breeds that started loosing feathers in splotches. The more feathers they lost the meaner they got. Finally got to the point I had to cull the flock. Now started new and I have spent more time with them one on one and so far they are the most friendly flock I have had. My not so much of a problem question, after 5 years with a roo I never thought I would miss the crowing. WRONG! At the fair I just stood and enjoyed the song. Now my Barred Rock Roo has never made as much as a peep. Are they a slow developing breed? The silence is killing us. Even the neighbors are letting us know the sound is missed. Any ideas? rj

My new EE Roo was 4 months. I had a silkey close to 6 months. We have a neighborhood B.O. Roo that both homes he hangs at has yet to hear a crow. I think you just need more time

He's a bit young still. Give him a few more weeks.

I heard they can start crowing at at 24 + weeks

they don't tend to crow until they are about 6 months old

Wow, do I ever understand that feeling! I only had a month with a crowing rooster, but found after he was gone that I missed that sound, even to the extent of having trouble sleeping at night for months afterward. Oddly enough, he never woke me up, just helped me sleep, lol. Thanks for mentioning the fair, looks like I may have a reason to go to ours when the time comes.
Hope I don't fall asleep in the middle of the poultry exhibit though.

i beleive he should start crooing soon. i agree i love that sound too. sounds like country

I just thought the Barred Rocks might be a SLOW breed when it comes to developing. I had a White Leghorn that started crowing within the first month. If you want to call it that. Made a good attempt. No other choice than wait and see.
