About a month ago I thought one of my 1 year old hens was sick but then I realized that she was broody (doh!). Three weeks ago I put two eggs under her that I got from a co worker. After two days one of the eggs disappeared. I'm not sure if it got broken in the nest and eaten or if one of my kids grabbed the wrong egg out of the coop. The other egg seemed to be developing well, although it was very porous and hard to candle.

Today was day 21. The remaining egg is gone with a few small pieces of shell in the nest and gook all over another egg that someone else laid in the nest. Hen moved to a different nest. I'm disappointed but its okay, I'll survive. My questions have to do with my hen.

Will she quit being broody now or will I need to break her? Also, could I put more eggs under her to try hatching? I don't want to make her ill by letting her be broody for too long. She looks really good right now. i don't know anyone that might have, or will have in a few days, newly hatched chicks or I would just put some chicks under her.

Thanks!
Angie

She may or may not stop on her own. If you want to try again, and she is in good health, might as well try. But if you don't really want/need chicks, you can always just mess up her nest comfort to break her.

Thank you! I don't mind trying again even though I don't need any more chicks. Any that I hatch out will go to my co worker when they get mostly grown. I have a call out to the local 4-H leader to see if any of the kids or anyone else at the fair have any newly hatched chicks. I just checked on the hen and she is standing at her empty nest and is she ever p!ssed!
