d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Do Belgium d'Anvers lay many eggs? I have a hen that is around +1 year old and she still hasn't latex? Help
seems to vary hen to hen. The average d'anver will lay 3-5 egg per week all threw spring to fall. Some lay 1 a day, some virtually none.
If she's over a year, she certainly should be laying. The only reason this time of year not to be getting eggs is if she's on a break from it or broody

I keep intending to post photos of the chicks I hatched from some of Kristin Ramsdell's eggs two weeks ago, but time is not working in my favor on that. I ended up with eight: one black, one white, a probably splash quail, three blue quail, one quail and what I am sure (for today) is a silver quail.

The splash quail and two of the blue quail are showing rusty shoulder feathering: is that a sign they're likely to be cockerels? I'd like to know so I can separate cockerels and start handling the splash one (if it is a cockerel) because the Chicken Calculater seems to indicate that would be the best choice to make a pen with a blue porcelein and a quail pullet (both of whom I already own) for interesting color outcomes.

Also, for the record: is white in d'Anvers dominant white?

yes rusty shoulders are almost always males, and no NORMAL  white in d'anver is recessive white over black. Only exception would be the dominate whites I have bred into them, a few others  have a couple like this but it's almost always in a pattern like red pyles or goldnecks. The solid whites in the d'anver world are always recesive unless  they are from a genetics breeder who created them as dominates for project work

Thanks- It's nice to know that there won't be anything hiding behind the white!

[/IMG]Judging by combs turning red. I have 3 Dun Cuckoo rooster. A Dun Quail, a Quail, a Black and a Cuckoo pullet. I will post pics soon Aubrey. They are in a brooder bucket outside on the kitchen balcony. I am sure finding homes for the extra boys will be easy peas.

Mina's really got some phenomenal markings on her, too-- what a pretty girl she really is. Seriously, your d'Anvers are all gorgeous! I love seeing them!

Smokey calmly watching over the chicks, unless they get too active-- then he turns his back to face away from them!

Emmaline's red-colored comb makes me suspect she's in fact an Emmet, what do you think?

Funny how breast and head are the last places to feather-out...

Sunshine, clover flowers, and Barbu d'Anvers... what a great afternoon we all had!

Josefina (not sold on the name yet) has gone from flighty, independant to a snuggler when she's tired of her adventures. She is coming to really trust me, and I so love her. A good thing, too-- because it may be that we have FIVE roosters and just one hen, her!

Okay, I'm off to go out again with the d'Anvers babies. We go out 2 times per day in the fenced yard or garden. Midas snagged an earthworm yesterday!

Off to go spoil them some more!

I love seeing all the different colors! They are all so cute and tempting!

This mille fleur pattern is mind-blowing! Some of the chicks are caramel-colored with comumbian hackle-y markings, sorta, and some black in the tail.. but a few REALLY have black speckles across the back already! This is thrilling to watch as they develop.

d'Anvers coop is coming today, and the d'Anvers pen will be built this weekend. This weekend is move-out time for the babies! They'll be 4 weeks and fully-feathered! They've been without heat for over a week now in the enclosed front porch brooder box, and happy as clams. The d'Anvers pen has a mesh top.

During the day, I'll still take them out for field trips as I do now. Daily, they go to work in the garden eating leafhoppers, worms, and caterpillars!

Aubrey and JJ, can mille fleurs be sexed by black in the hackles for males? Or is that found in females, too? Thanks!

they are a mottled buff columbian so both sexes will have black hackles and tails, but in most cases the black is bolder and biger in the males. But no, it's kinda hard to feather sex by color on them. On mine usually the paler ones are the pullets and the redder ones the males. Reddish colors in the wing bow/shoulder area is usually a males thing too.

Thanks, Aubrey! I think I have five cockerels and one hen!

What about the tiny little bump-knob thingy at the far end of their baby chick future rose combs, does a raised bump back there mean it's a cockerel?

I have one sassy, independent, zesty little pullet who when sleepy, flies up to the height of my knee, then stands on the ground, waiting for me to pick her up. I love it!
