Daphne’s “push through ‘til winter” thread

They can know way before us. Found that out yesterday when a hawk came by.
Happy to hear she is doing great!

It’s amazing that they can spot an aerial predator that is just a speck in the sky. It always takes me a minute to see what they see. If I was a duck, I’d have been eaten by a hawk a long time ago!

Daphne’s latest offering is interesting. It has more of a shell than usual, although it’s thin enough to be translucent. However, there’s calcium deposits on the outside. There’s too much calcium at one end of the production line and too little at the other end? Poor girl can’t figure it out. I wish I could get a picture of the light coming through it. You can see the yolk!

We’ve definitely entered the expected turbulent period in which DH and I have discussions about what to do if Daphne doesn’t make it as Matilda wouldn’t do well as an “only Rouen”. However, after having a rough evening, Daphne’s bright and happy once again this morning after having passed an unshelled egg overnight. Last year, she stopped laying for the season (and was therefore A-OK) after the Vet helped her pass this monstrosity on 09/03. She’s just got to make it a bit longer!

Bless her heart. I hope she can hang in there a little longer. What an egg she laid last year.
When my Runner was having trouble laying a softshell It took her half a day before it came. After she got it out she was fine. Poor things.

Sadly, it appeared to not be an option when I spoke to Daphne’s Vet about it. It was unclear if it was a legal issue or if the medicine was just unavailable. That being said, this is the only truly concerning time of year. So far, the Calsorb is doing the trick!
